Event Category:

Meet at 10.30 in the Shotover Hill carpark OX3 8TA, Grid Ref. SP56410621 which is at the top of Shotover Hill on Old Road, Headington. Buses stop near the bottom of Old Road – which will require a 15-20min walk uphill to the park, or from Horspath Rd or the Slade which also involves a 15-20min walk.

Shotover has acid soils with grassland and open woodland, while Brasenose Wood has a typical coppice woodland flora. Shotover and Brasenose Wood are still managed using the traditional method of coppice-with-standards. There are 221 species of vascular plants there (46 of which are specific to ancient woodland). Brasenose Wood’s Shotover Hill is described by Natural England as of outstanding entomological interest due to its many rare ants, bees, flies, and wasps.
