Meet at 10:30 in the Gwaunruppera car park CF72 8QQ, which is just off Heol-y-Sarn in Llantrisant and from where it is a short walk to the Common. The Common is a remarkable survival of a type of landscape that, several hundred years ago, would have been common across large parts of South Wales. Dominated by marshland, but also with areas of short, grassy turf, patches of heather and pockets of peat bog, this mix of habitats is known, in South Wales, as “rhôs pasture”. Grazing has ensured the survival of a range of wildlife, with the site being noted for its population of Cornish Moneywort Sibthorpia europaea. Other special plants we might hope to see include Meadow Thistle Cirsium dissectum, Petty Whin Genista anglica, Royal Fern Osmunda regalis, Sherard’s Downy Rose Rosa sherardii, Moonwort Botrychium lunaria and Glamorganshire Hawkweed Hieracium adelphicum, as well a range of sedges Carex spp. and orchids Dactylorhiza spp.

An aside from the Meetings Secretary: David’s book “The Wild Plants of Llantrisant Common and Y Gweira” (available direct from the author at  dbarden77@yahoo.co.uk) will inspire you to come on the meeting and is a treat to read.
