Meet at 10.30 meet at Lammas Recreation Ground Car Park, Wraysbury Road, Staines, TW18 4UA (pay and display). There are public toilets in Lammas Recreation Ground.
Staines Moor SSSI is one of the remaining pastures of the medieval Manor of Staines and is the largest area of alluvial meadow in Surrey. The moor has remained unploughed, with no use of fertilizer or pesticides for 1000 years making it a very ancient and unique habitat. Owing to subtle variations in topography, sheer size, and the river Colne, plant communities vary greatly from dry grassland to marshland-dominant species. It has been common land since 1065 and is still grazed by horse and cattle, so participants should be prepared for encountering these animals. Amongst others, we would hope to see Musk Thistle Carduus nutans, Spiny Restharrow Ononis spinosa, Flowering-rush Butomus umbellatus, Arrow-head Sagittaria sagittifolia and Blue Water-Speedwell Veronica anagallis-aquatica. Optional drink in The Bells pub afterwards!
