North Wales
Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st May: North Wales
Leader: Matt Jones
Wednesday 20th: Cwm Idwal
Meet at 9:30 outside the Visitor Centre, LL57 3LZ; Grid Ref: SH649603. There is a pay and display car park outside the centre. The visitor centre is located by the A5 road, about 5 miles south of Bethesda and about 4 miles west of Capel Curig, on Llyn Ogwen’s western end.
We’ll spend the day exploring one of Britain’s beautiful botanical hotspots. There are many alpine species that are unusually accessible here and we should see 6 Saxifrages! As well as the alpines up on the slopes, we’ll be looking at the flora around the Llyn including Awlwort Subularia aquatica, Shoreweed Littorella uniflora and Water Lobelia Lobelia dortmanna.
Other species of note include Globeflower Trollius europaeus, Snowdon Lily Gagea serotina, Wilson’s Filmy-fern Hymenophyllum wilsonii and Mountain Sorrel Oxyria digyna.
Reasonably steep walking throughout, although folks can probably stay on the (rocky) path for the majority of the day (although they may miss a few plants!).
Thursday 21st: Anglesey
Meet at 10:30. Details of meeting place will be given to participants nearer the date.
For the second day of the meeting, we’ll head across to Anglesey and explore a few fens. Notable plants include Bog-sedge Carex limosa, Pale Dog-violet Viola lactea and Great Fen-sedge Cladium mariscus as well as some nice populations of a suite of orchid species with possible cross genera hybrids.
