Friday 14th August: Leamington Spa, Warwickshire

Joint meeting with Warwickshire Flora Group

Leaders; John and Monika Walton

Meet at 10.30 at the Princes Drive car park, Park Drive, CV32 6AF; Grid Ref: SP309654, which is free. This car park is a ten-minute walk from Leamington Spa station.

In the morning, we will visit Foundry Wood, walk along by the canal and back through the town for roughly two miles. In the afternoon we will visit the large St. Mary’s Allotment site, which is off the Radford Road, to the east of the town at CV31 1LQ, Grid Ref: SP330653 one of only a few allotment sites that have their own traffic lights.

We should find a good mixture of interesting garden escapes: including Cut-leaved Teasel Dipsacus laciniatus, Green Amaranth Amaranthus hybridus, Spreading Cotoneaster Cotoneaster divaricatus and Balkan Spurge Euphorbia oblongata. There is a colony of Maidenhair Fern Adiantum capillus-veneris under the railway arches. Recent finds at the allotments include Yellow Bristle-grass Setaria pumila and Greater Duckweed Spirodela polyrhiza and Curled Pondweed Potamogeton crispus that live in baths used to store water. A seedling of Chusan Palm, Trachycarpus fortunei has been spotted in a private garden near the station.
