Start:
28 June
End:
29 June
Leader:
Nick Aston
Location:
New Forest, Hampshire and Dorset
Event Category:

This meeting will partly cover some of the same locations visited in last year’s New Forest meeting. Priority will be given to members who were not able to attend last year’s meeting.

Meet at 10.30 at the New Forest car park called ‘Shatterford’ Grid Ref: SU348064, which is on the B3056 Beaulieu Road heading south-west from Lyndhurst. Please note the turning for this car park is immediately before the road/rail bridge at Beaulieu Road railway station. There are no public toilet facilities at this car park, but there are toilets in the centre of Lyndhurst, which should be visited prior to meeting at Shatterford. Please bring waterproof boots (e.g. wellington boots).

The morning of the first day will be based around Shatterford Bottom, Beaulieu Road, and the afternoon will be spent exploring Hatchet Pond. What we see will heavily depend on the season, but we can hope to encounter plants such as Wild Gladiolus Gladiolus illyricus, Coral-necklace Illecebrum verticillatum, Marsh Clubmoss Lycopodiella inundata, Hampshire-purslane Ludwigia palustris and Lesser Bladderwort Utricularia minor.

The second day will be based in Dorset. Details of time and meeting location will be decided on day one. The morning will be spent at Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood, on the Hampshire/Dorset border. We can hope to see heathland plants such as Yellow Bartsia Parentucellia viscosa and a native population of Deptford Pink Dianthus armeria. In the afternoon we will explore Ashley Heath for Brown Beak-sedge Rhynchospora fusca and two naturalised aliens Highbush Blueberry Vaccinium corymbosum and American Cranberry Vaccinium macrocarpon.

Important information about Two Day Meeting

  • Field meetings are open to all members of the Society. Guests may also attend meetings. Children are welcome but remain the responsibility of parents/guardians at all times.
  • Leaders have received updated procedures and recommendations to ensure the safety of members on meetings with regard to Covid-19. These include maintaining social distancing and perhaps limiting numbers at a meeting depending on terrain.
  • To receive monthly updates with details about availability of places or changes to arrangements in meetings and information about extra meetings, sign up for the WFS Alerts system.
  • Please DO NOT bring dogs as many field meetings are held in nature reserves or where there are grazing animals. Registered guide dogs may be exempt from this requirement, unless they are prohibited by the landowners. Please check with the meeting organiser.
  • Transport and accommodation is the responsibility of the attendee. However, members who do not drive or who have difficulty in reaching the starting point should contact the leader, whose details you will be given when you book, to see if transport might be available.
  • Please arrive promptly for the meeting. If you have traffic problems let the leader know so they can advise on the route and how you can find the group.
  • When you arrive at the meeting, park considerately, act responsibly, bearing in mind the Countryside Code, and stay with the group. Always inform the leader if you must leave before the end of a meeting.
  • Packed lunches are usually required and need to be carried.
  • All those attending Wild Flower Society field meetings do so at their own risk.
