Friday 10th June: Farthing Downs, Ditches Lane, Coulsdon, Surrey

Meet at 10:30 at Farthing Down Car Park (£3 not cash, pay by card or Ringo App), TQ301 571, CR5 1DA, What3words app: moves.groom.lively. Toilets at Coulsdon South Station which is a 25 minutes walk away. If coming by train please say on booking, and we will try to organise a lift.

We hope to see an extravaganza of orchids! Bee Orchids Ophrys apifera, Man Orchids Orchis anthropophora, Common Spotted-orchids Dactylorhiza fuchsii, Chalk Fragrant-orchids Gymnadenia conopsea, White Helleborines Cephalanthera damasonium and plenty of chalk flora. Some steep and uneven paths

Saturday 11th June: Beachy Head, Sussex

Meet at 10:30 at Holywell Tea Rooms at the end of the promenade TV 604 973 at the foot of Beachy Head. We will start the walk at 11-00 so time for a coffee first!

There are toilets here and refreshments. (Allow at least 40 minutes to walk from the railway station) There is no parking here so you will have to find parking in the nearby roads (The Meads area of the town).

A walk along the beach beneath the cliffs at Beachy Head to enjoy the flora typical of this area, a mixture of maritime and chalk loving plants. Plants we hope to see include Tree-mallow Malva arborea,  Silver Ragwort Jacobea maritima, Hoary Stock Matthiola incana, Horseshoe Vetch Hippocrepis comosa, Wild Onion Allium vineale and Sainfoin Onobrychis viciifolia plus many others,

The walk along the beach will be rocky and with shingle. There will be some steep slopes when we climb up from the beach, walking boots are recommended.

Meeting limited to a maximum of 15 participants.

Important information about Two Day Meeting

  • Field meetings are open to all members of the Society. Guests may also attend meetings. Children are welcome but remain the responsibility of parents/guardians at all times.
  • Leaders have received updated procedures and recommendations to ensure the safety of members on meetings with regard to Covid-19. These include maintaining social distancing and perhaps limiting numbers at a meeting depending on terrain.
  • To receive monthly updates with details about availability of places or changes to arrangements in meetings and information about extra meetings, sign up for the WFS Alerts system.
  • Please DO NOT bring dogs as many field meetings are held in nature reserves or where there are grazing animals. Registered guide dogs may be exempt from this requirement, unless they are prohibited by the landowners. Please check with the meeting organiser.
  • Transport and accommodation is the responsibility of the attendee. However, members who do not drive or who have difficulty in reaching the starting point should contact the leader, whose details you will be given when you book, to see if transport might be available.
  • Please arrive promptly for the meeting. If you have traffic problems let the leader know so they can advise on the route and how you can find the group.
  • When you arrive at the meeting, park considerately, act responsibly, bearing in mind the Countryside Code, and stay with the group. Always inform the leader if you must leave before the end of a meeting.
  • Packed lunches are usually required and need to be carried.
  • All those attending Wild Flower Society field meetings do so at their own risk.
